2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined direction.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full message from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game playtest was revealing. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to consideration and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Director of the team. Following a period of conversations, Ben starts with us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all looking forward to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
