At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
