Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
