The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
