Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
